Hongkew is one of the last neighbourhoods of Shanghai with the curious townhouses unique to the city. The buildings lead off a central alley: the only entrance being a small passage tot he front that doubles as a shop, housing food stalls, barber-shops and general stores. In essence, the workers of these stalls are 'gatekeepers' to the small community that lives on the other side.
Within a few years, these will all be gone...
